This webinar will address the significance of the termination phase of play therapy. Topics to be discussed include: models for saying goodbye, the benefits of play, assessing readiness, dealing with countertransference, and choosing play materials to help children express feelings about separation, loss, and mastery. Play therapy techniques for termination for both in-person and online play therapy will also be discussed.


Learning Objectives

  • List two reasons why the termination is an important phase of play therapy.
  • Describe two criteria for assessing if play therapy clients are ready for termination.
  • Identify two ways in which countertransference can influence termination in play therapy.
  • List three specific toys for helping children deal with separation, loss, and mastery during the termination phase of play therapy.
  • Discuss three play therapy techniques for the termination phase of play therapy


Course materials:

Suggested Materials:

  • White drawing paper
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons, pastels, etc.
  • Plain paper bag (preferably with handle)
  • Old magazines
  • Glue/glue stick
  • Scissors

Optional:

  • Play Doh
  • 1 garden stone or seashell (or you can use template)
  • Paints or permanent markers
  • Beads, ribbons, and other embellishments

Donna Cangelosi maintains a private practice with children, adolescents, and adults in Wayne NJ, where she provides psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and parent education. She co-edited Play Therapy Techniques, Volumes 1 & 2, The Playing Cure, Essential Play Therapy Techniques, and Prescriptive Play Therapy. Dr. Cangelosi is the author of Saying Goodbye in Child Psychotherapy and several chapters and articles on working with children of divorce and the theory and practice of psychodynamic play therapy.
