Description:
This new course is a comprehensive approach to using Play Therapy with children diagnosed with Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This first section will cover the background and causes of ADHD, the behavioral components, and the different approaches that will be used to give a state-of-the-art understanding of the play therapy methods and interventions that help children with ADHD heal. We will also cover the highly sensitive child since many children with ADHD have sensory issues of some kind. Play therapy research will also be included, as well as the biological components which complicate the treatment. Participants will see how game play facilitates the treatment, and how the parent training helps parents appreciate their child in a new light. Actual client presentations will be viewed and discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the three components of ADHD and how they are manifested in play therapy.
  • Describe two techniques in play therapy that help with symptoms of ADHD.
  • Identify how to assess attention span and impulsivity through play in a play therapy session.
  • Explain 2 cognitive-behavioral techniques in play therapy to help with psychological difficulties inherent with children with ADHD.
  • Describe strategies for parents in play therapy to assist children.
  • Explain why play therapy is a treatment of choice along with behavioral methods for parents.
