In an age of increased anxiety, many children are being seen with excessive worrying. This can interfere with their ability to have the quality of life that children need to prosper and learn. In addition, as the pandemic continued, many children developed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. As play therapists, we have the tools to allow these children to work through the worry and, in addition, teach them through play how to minimize or discontinue worry and allow for positive thinking. This seminar will provide a learning experience that will enhance their abilities to treat children with this syndrome and OCD. The didactic presentation will also have experiential techniques, as well as actual case illustrations through video format.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the levels of anxiety and sources of anxiety that children exhibit in play therapy
- Describe how anxiety can grow to a point of have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
- Utilize play therapy techniques to assess anxiety in play therapy and consider the course of action to take.
- Describe two cognitive-behavioral techniques in play therapy to relieve excessive worrying.
- Compare the differences among children in play therapy struggling with excessive worry.
- Demonstrate the basics of being playful in play therapy and how that counters anxiety.
Your Instructor
Dr. Heidi Gerard Kaduson is a licensed clinical child psychologist in New York and New Jersey. She received her Ph.D. from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She specializes in the evaluation and intervention services for children with a variety of behavioral, emotional, and learning problems.
Dr. Kaduson uses Play Therapy for individual counseling, group psychotherapy, and social skills training. She has lectured throughout the world on Play Therapy, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and Learning Disabilities. She has trained and/or supervised thousands of individuals around the world. Dr. Kaduson is Past-President and a past-Member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Play Therapy, as well as the Director of The Play Therapy Training Institute.
